Virgil Abloh Is the First Designer Drop in the Met’s Instagram Gift Shop for “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion”

In many ways, this September marks the return of fashion in New York City. Fashion Week begins today after a long hiatus of in-person events, and the Met Gala (which was canceled due to the pandemic in 2020) is less than a week away. To celebrate this year’s Costume Institute exhibition, “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion,” Vogue, the Met Store, Instagram, and a handful of our favorite American designers have teamed up on a series of unique virtual shopping experiences and limited-edition capsules that launches this Friday.

The list of American designers who have dreamed up special-edition capsule collections exclusively for the Met is impressive: Virgil Abloh of Off-White, Emily Bode of Bode, Aurora James of Brother Vellies, Christopher John Rogers, Hillary Taymour of Collina Strada, Rio Uribe of Gypsy Sport, Prabal Gurung, and Kerby Jean-Raymond of Pyer Moss. (Most of these designers will also have pieces on view in “America.”) Each capsule will be unveiled in a live shopping event on Instagram.

To kick things off, the series begins with Off-White. In a glimpse into the future of fashion and shopping, on Friday, September 10, at 11:45 a.m. ET, Off-White’s Abloh, Eva Chen (Instagram’s VP of fashion and shopping), and a bevy of surprise celebrity guests are set to reveal Off-White’s limited-edition pieces on Vogue’s Instagram. The best part? As the products arrive, you can seamlessly shop your favorites directly from the Met Store’s Instagram account without having to leave the app—simply tap any item to check out.

After Off-White’s inaugural launch of the series this Friday, the remaining capsules will drop monthly through April 2022—just in time for part two of the Costume Institute’s exhibition. Each designer’s special-edition pieces will be available exclusively at @themetstore Instagram and, if supplies last, the Met Store’s online shop.

Tune in to @voguemagazine at 11:45 a.m. ET this Friday, September 10, to participate in the live event and shop the first capsule.
